The Miami Herald learned Thursday from multiple sources that Miami Dolphins great and NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jason Taylor has taken the job as the University of Miami defensive ends coach - the final assistant coaching vacancy on head coach Mario Cristobal's staff. Taylor, 48, a well-respected, beloved figure, in 2022 served as a defensive analyst with the Hurricanes. He will replace former UM defensive ends coach Rod Wright, who has left the Hurricanes to join the NFL's Houston Texans staff.

Taylor could also coach outside linebackers, as UM previously announced new "inside linebackers coach" Derek Nicholson. Taylor's hiring completes Cristobal's assistant coaching staff. The Herald reported early Wednesday that former UM 2001 national champion and former UM assistant Kevin Beard is being hired as the wide receivers coach to replace Josh Gattis, who also served as offensive coordinator. Spring practice begins Saturday at Greentree Field. - Miami Herald

SMU added more talent to its offensive line on Monday when former Miami (FL) starting center Jakai Clark announced his commitment to the Mustangs. Clark, a former three-star recruit out of Loganville, Georgia, started the majority of the last two seasons for the Hurricanes. SMU has already signed 16 transfers in this cycle. Five of those transfers played at Miami (FL) with Clark. They'll all reunite in Dallas. Clark is also the fourth Power Five offensive lineman to transfer to SMU. The Mustangs previously added Texas offensive lineman Logan Parr, Missouri offensive lineman Hyrin White and Texas A&M transfer P.J. Williams. - Dallas Morning News

The SMU football program has been no stranger to the transfer portal, bolstering many positions with veteran experience throughout the offseason. After Tanner Mordecai's departure to Wisconsin, Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs were ready to look forward to the future at quarterback. That future will include another experienced player at signal caller.

On Friday, former Iowa quarterback Alex Padilla took to Twitter to announce his transfer to SMU. In three seasons with the Big Ten program, Padilla completed 77 of 157 pass attempts for 821 yards and three touchdowns to go with four interceptions. Padilla, a Greenwood Village, Colo. native, announced his intention to transfer from Iowa on Nov. 29. He was originally a three-star recruit in the class of 2019, according to 247Sports. - Dallas Morning News

Before the transfer window deadline closed, one last Hurricane submitted his name to the transfer portal. Starting center Jakai Clark announced Thursday he had entered the portal. "I have officially entered my name into the transfer portal," Clark wrote on his Twitter account. "Thank you to Miami for the many opportunities the have blessed me with, including getting my degree after this spring semester. I am now open to talking to other schools." Clark was a key mainstay on the Hurricanes' offensive line for most of the 2022 season. He started 10 of Miami's 12 games and played limited time in another, missing one game due to injury. - Sun Sentinel

Romello Brinson, a former top-150 recruit in the Class of 2021, announced his intention to transfer to SMU on Instagram. Brinson visited SMU this past weekend. He also visited Colorado and Penn State. In two seasons at Miami, Brinson recorded a total of 14 catches for 189 yards and one touchdown. His one touchdown was a spectacular leaping grab that was considered one of the best catches in the country in 2021. SMU now has 16 transfer commitments in a class that's ranked No. 6 in the country, per 247Sports.

Brinson joins four other former Miami players in transferring to the Hilltop. Fellow wide receiver Key'Shawn Smith, running back Jaylan 'Rooster' Knighton, and defensive linemen Elijah Roberts and Jordan Miller also plan to play for the Mustangs next season. The connection is obvious. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee and many of his assistants were previously coaching at Miami, including Brewer and wide receivers coach Rob Likens. - Dallas Morning News

College football aficionados can exhale soon enough. Wednesday is the final day for players to enter the NCAA transfer portal, before it reopens again for 15 days beginning May 1. This recent portal period began Dec. 5 and was set to end before midnight Wednesday. However, once inside the portal, players are still eligible to transfer. For the Miami Hurricanes, the recent portal period resulted in at least 19 Hurricanes with remaining eligibility entering the portal and another one, Jakai Clark, expected to transfer after he finishes his final semester and graduates in May, the Athletic reported.

Backup UM quarterback Jake Garcia was the latest Cane to enter the portal late Tuesday afternoon, leaving UM with scholarship quarterbacks Tyler Van Dyke, Jacurri Brown and new early enrollee Emory Williams. On Wednesday, UM receiver Romello Brinson, who had previously entered the portal, became the fifth player to join former UM offensive coordinator and current SMU Mustangs head coach Rhett Lashlee. The others: Fellow receiver Key'Shawn Smith, running back Jaylan Knighton and defensive linemen Elijah Roberts and Jordan Miller. - Miami Herald

Former Liberty cornerback Chris Megginson is reuniting with a pair of former coaches to conclude his college career. The Heritage High School product announced on social media Saturday morning he is transferring to SMU for his final year of eligibility. The move for Megginson, which came on an official visit, will reunite him with defensive coordinator Scott Symons and position coach Rickey Hunley. Symons and Hunley served in the same positions during Megginson's first three seasons at Liberty.

The 6-foot Lynchburg native racked up 98 tackles, 15 pass breakups and one interception in 48 career games. He spent his freshman season splitting time between safety and cornerback, and then he settled into the cornerback role in 2020. His lone interception came in 2020 at Syracuse. Megginson secured 16 offers after entering the transfer portal Dec. 19, one day before the Flames played Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl. - Lynchburg News and Advance

Freshman cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson entered the transfer portal Thursday, leaving LSU with two scholarship cornerbacks set to return next season as an already thin position lost another player. Davis-Robinson, a three-star recruit from Waxahachie, Texas, redshirted this fall. Coach Brian Kelly mentioned his name positively a few times, but Davis-Robinson only appeared in three games. He was the 14th LSU player to enter the transfer portal since a 45-day window opened Dec. 5. The Tigers have now lost six scholarship cornerbacks. Three of them - Davis-Robinson, redshirt junior Raydarious Jones and sophomore Damarius McGhee - entered the transfer portal. Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Colby Richardson used their last seasons of eligibility, and Mekhi Garner turned pro. Defensive back Jay Ward, who has experience at corner, also declared for the NFL Draft. - Baton Rouge Advocate
